Zilla
![]() Zilla (ジラ) is the American Godzilla that appeared in the 1998 film. An iguana or a Komodo Dragon became mutated through French nuclear testing in the South Pacific, causing it to grow in size. Lacking the Japanese Godzilla's durability and radioactive breath, this incarnation made up for it with increased speed and agility. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The beast first attacked a Japanese fishing ship, and was dubbed Gojira by the crew, and Godzilla by the U.S. media. After travelling to New York City, the reptile laid several hundred eggs in Madison Square Garden. A trio of F-18s bombed the Gardens, slaying all of the newborn Godzillas. When an enraged Godzilla appeared at the Gardens' remains, it chased a taxi with those responsible for its children's deaths inside. They lured it into becoming trapped within the suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, and Godzilla was killed by the same F-18s that had destroyed its kin. One egg, however, deep within the subway, had survived the earlier bombing, and hatched. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Later, an animated series was produced that continued the story of Godzilla's surviving baby, who lead a role reminiscent to the original Japanese films. A human team of researchers, known as H.E.A.T., followed Godzilla, who fought various monsters around the world. This series corrected a lot of problems of the feature film, returning to Godzilla his durability, aggresiveness, and most notably, its atomic ray. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This incarnation of Godzilla is mentioned briefly in the prologue of ' (2001), where it was said that American scientists had mistaken it for the real Godzilla. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ A few years later, he appeared in ' (2004), finally taking his place in the ranks of Toho's numerous kaiju. It was also given an official name in the film, "Zilla." As one of the many creatures controlled by the Xiliens, Zilla attacks Sydney, Australia, and is later defeated by the real Godzilla, slain by the creature's atomic ray. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Before given the name of Zilla, it was (and still is) often referred to by fans as GINO, an acronym for "Godzilla In Name Only." Other names include American Godzilla, TriStar Godzilla, Godzilla 1998, Fraudzilla, or Deanzilla (after the film's producer, Dean Devlin). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
