Yentl

Yentl is a 1983 American film. It is based upon the short story "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy", by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Barbra Streisand was producer, director, writer and star. Jack Rosenthal was also involved in the writing for this movie. It won an Academy Award for original song score.

The film is about a young Jewish woman living in Poland during the early 20th century. Her mother is dead, and her father teaches her the Talmud in secret (religious restrictions barred women from such study). After her father dies, she disguises herself as a man in order to study the Talmud at a yeshiva (a religious school), and gets involved in two romantic entanglements because of her disguise. The film features many songs by Streisand, performed as soliloquies. They include "The Way He Makes Me Feel" and "Papa, Can You Hear Me?"
