Microsoft's next generation Xbox, the Xbox 360, will be released on November 22nd 2005. NVidia announced that they will cease production of the Xbox's GPU in August of that year, which will almost certainly mark the end of Xbox production and the quick release of the Xbox 360 featuring a new GPU from NVidia's rival ATI. http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/afx/2005/05/12/afx2024549.html

It is unclear to what extent games for the original Xbox will be compatible with the Xbox 360. As the architectures are entirely different between Xbox and Xbox 360, unlike other backwards-compatible consoles such as the PlayStation 2, software emulation is likely the only viable option for compatibility. Software emulation for complex hardware is notoriously difficult to make correctly, even for the developer of the original hardware. Microsoft has only stated that the most popular Xbox games will be playable, with no mention of other games. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=8996
