WWOR-TV

WWOR-TV (UPN 9) is the flagship station of the UPN network. It serves the New York City DMA, with studios and license in Secaucus, New Jersey. The station is owned by Fox Broadcasting, a division of NewsCorp. The station is seen via satellite in the U. S. on the Dish Network.

Channel 9 signed on the air in 1949 as an independent station under the call letters WOR, owned by the Bamberger Broadcasting Service, owners of WOR radio. Bamberger Broadcasting was a division of R. H. Macy and Company, and was named after Bamberger's department store in Newark, New Jersey. Bamberger's started WOR in 1922, seven years before the store was sold to Macy's. The original city of license was New York City. When the station first signed on, there was no audio for the first six minutes, during a message from the radio outlet's John B. Gambling. The message was repeated later on that night prior to sign off. WOR-AM was the flagship of the Mutual Broadcasting System, and when Mutual briefly explored getting into television, WOR-TV was selected as the flagship for the would-be network. However, those plans fizzled.
