Wu Jingzi

Wu Ching-tzu, pinyin Wu Jingzi was a Chinese writer born in 1701 in Ch'uan-chiao in Anhwei provence, and died 12 December 1754 in Yang-chou in the Chiang-nan province.

He was born in a well to do family but met no success himself. Poverty stricken at the age of 32 he moved to Nanking. In 1740 he started his book Ju-lin wai-shih which means in English "Unofficial history of officialdom" (English translation published as The Scholars). It is the first Chinese satryical novel which he finished it in 1750 and is Wu's claim to fame. It is a fictitious account of corrupt and hypocritical scholars. While criticising such scholars it also praises genuine scholars. His name can also spelled as Wu Ching-tse. The novel is available in an English translation by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang.
