The station was founded in 1948 and was Connecticut's first television station. It was initially on Channel 6 and was known as WNHC. It later moved to Channel 8 in the mid-1950s. The station has been an ABC affiliate since the early 1950s.

The station was sold to Triangle Publications in 1955, and came under the ownership of Capital Cities Communications in 1971. The station changed its call letters to WTNH in 1981.
