The single was co-produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. The performance is a cover; the original song was performed by Badfinger and co-written by two of its members, Pete Ham and Tom Evans. The song was also covered by Harry Nillson, who made it an international hit, and the production is based on his version. In this tragic classic, Mariah lets a lover know that she can't survive without him: "I can't live if living is without you". The song is often criticized for its undertone of suicide, and in fact Ham and Evans committed suicide themselves.
