Wilhelm Leibl
Wilhelm Leibl (Cologne 1844 - Würzburg 1900) was a German pastoral and portrait painter. He lived most of his life as a peasant in Bavaria, and didn't become a professional painter until later in life. He trained with Hermann Becker in Cologne then entered the Munich Academy. He then spent 1868 with Carl Theodor von Piloty. He set up a group studio in 1869, with Johann Sperl, Theodor Alt, and Rudolf Hirth du Frenes, but after a visit to Paris the following year he decided to retire to the isolated Bavarian countryside. His works were known for an intensely realistic style, a style of which he was the leading representative. His style inspired followers, and their works are described as being of the Leibl-Circle.
