Whiteboys

The Whiteboys were a secret Irish organisation. They first emerged in 1760, the beginning of George III's reign in Ireland, and spread over the next century until they were present in most of the country. They used violent tactics to defend peasant land rights for subsistance farming. Their name derives from the white smocks the members wore in their nightly raids.
