What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a 1993 comedy/dramatic movie directed by Lasse Hallström. It stars Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio. It is based on a book by author Peter Hedges. The film's tagline is Life is a terrible thing to sleep through.

Plot Summary

Dedicated to his mentally handicapped brother and reclusive, overweight mother, grocery worker Gilbert Grape (played by Johnny Depp) rethinks his life after meeting a young woman passing through town in Iowa. With Gilbert's father dead and his mother unable to care for her children, Gilbert takes responsibilty for both his brother Arnie (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and repairing the old house. Arnie climbed the town's water tower several times. On one of these occasions, Gilbert convinced the police not to put Arnie in jail. The town changed in several ways during the film. The first was the opening of Foodland, the supermarket which caused the owner's of the local grocery store to fear that all of their customers would go to Foodland, mentioning their fresh lobsters. The second was the opening of Burger Barn, a fast-food restaurant. In all, this film shows changes both within Gilbert's family and the town that they live in.
