The series first aired (in black-and white) on the BBC in 1956. Edwards took the part of Professor James Edwards, the drunken, gambling, devious headmaster of Chiselbury public school. Arthur Howard also starred. The show was written by Frank Muir and Denis Norden. A movie based on the show and called Bottoms Up! was released in 1959.
