Western Addition

Western Addition is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. The boundaries of it are not very well defined, but it is located in the area of the city between Van Ness Avenue on the east, the Richmond District on the west, the Pacific Heights to the north and the Haight-Ashbury and Haight-Fillmore to the south. Western Addition contains many smaller neighborhoods such as Japantown, The Fillmore, Hayes Valley, Lower Pacific Heights, North Panhandle, Cathedral Hill, and Anza Vista. According to some, it might not even go as far as the Richmond District, possibly only as far as Divisadero Street or Presidio and Masonic Streets (thus leaving out Laural Heights).

The Central Freeway used to run through the neighborhood to Turk Street, but that section of the freeway was closed immediately after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and later demolished.
