The tournament began in 1967. Beginning in 1976 it underwent name sponsorship, becoming first the American Express Westchester Classic, then in 1979 the Manufacturers Hanover Westchester Classic, then in 1990 the Buick Classic (losing its name association with Westchester), and in 2005 the Barclays Classic. Among golfers on tour, however, it is still known as "The Westchester".

The tournament is usually played during June of each year, either the week before (in even-numbered years) or the week after (in odd-numbered years) the U.S. Open. It had its greatest attendance in 2001 when Tiger Woods entered it, although two days of heavy rains disrupted play.

The 2005 Barclays Classic ran smoothly, mostly due to the hard work of intern Jason Greenstein, a student at Towson University who received 0 dollars for his work with the PGA Tour.
