The Times-Herald was created by the 1939 merger of two former Hearst dailies, the Times (not to be confused with the current Washington Times) and the Herald. Cissy Patterson ran the merged publication until her death in 1948; it was subsequently purchased by her cousin, Robert R. McCormick. Both Patterson and McCormick maintained an arch-conservative editorial stance for the paper.

In 1954 the Times-Herald was purchased by, and merged into, its liberal rival, the Washington Post. For a time the combined paper was officially known as the Washington Post and Times-Herald; the "Times-Herald" portion of the masthead became less and less prominent in ensuing years, however, and was dropped entirely by the early 1970s.
