War Child (charity)

War Child is an organisation founded by Bill Leeson and David Wilson in 1993, after witnessing the fate of children in war-torn Yugoslavia having made a film about the role of artists in war. Shocked by the plight of children - this war like so many in the world, was a war against civilians - they decided to use their film and entertainment background to raise money for the innocent victims of that gruesome war.

National branches

War Child Netherlands has specialised in helping the psychosocial needs of children who have suffered from war and/or conflict situations, by means of a special methology developed by them. Today, War Child Netherlands employs 300 field staff. With support from the Head Office in Amsterdam, they work with around 15,000 children per week in 11 countries affected by armed conflict.

War Child Canada provides humanitarian assistance in emergency situations and implements long term programs to provide children and youth with the opportunity to grow to their full potential through education, skills training, trauma healing and by taking an active role in the reconstruction of their communities.

War Child UK exists to:

• provide emergency relief to children and those people they depend upon in areas of armed conflict.
• protect children who live in areas of armed conflict.
• address the on-going consequences of conflict on children.

War Child does this by:

• working with local communities, their organisations and local authorities in both conflict and post-conflict areas to support children and the people they depend upon.
• ensuring sustainable security for children.
• promoting child supportive livelihood opportunities.
