From 1901 to 1912, Griffin worked for Frank Lloyd Wright in Oak Park, Illinois. During this time, Griffin designed many houses in the Chicago area, and also married Marion Lucy Mahony early in his career in 1911. Among the homes designed by Walter Burley Griffin are a group built by a local developer in an area known as Tracy, Illinois, now known as the East Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. These homes constitute the largest group of extant small-scale Walter Burley Griffin-designed homes in the United States and the block of W. 104th Place on which they are located is recognized as Walter Burley Griffin Place, and form a municipal historical district. Other Walter Burley Griffin homes are located in Beverly and a Walter Burley Griffin/Marion Mahony designed development with several homes is located in Mason City, Iowa.
