Grant's character was a businessman who was caught up in the lack of space due to the Games, and wound up sharing very cramped space with an American athlete, portrayed by Jim Hutton. Mr. Hutton was enamored of a young lady, played by Samantha Eggar.

Jim Hutton's sport was race-walking, which he seemed to reticent to talk to Cary Grant about. Grant became involuntarily involved in the romantic troubles of Hutton and Eggar, and the movie culminates in Grant suddenly appearing in his underwear race-walking in the event with Hutton, trying to heal the breach between the young lovers.

Scenes of Grant making coffee are hilarious. He plays a well-to-do person who has obviously never made his own coffee, and fills the basket to the brim, then levels it off with his hand.
