On Stage 15 of the 2005 Wales Rally, Michael Park, Markko Märtin's co-driver, was fatally injured in a crash. Martin did not sustain any injuries. The stage was immediately halted and the remaining two stages were cancelled shortly after. Sébastien Loeb had been leading the rally at the time and was pronounced the winner, however he deliberately incurred a two minute time penalty to drop to third overall and ensure he wouldn't retain his title in the circumstances. The traditional champagne celebration and press conference following the finish were also cancelled.
