W. J. Edrich
William John Edrich was a distinguished English cricketer who played for Middlesex County Cricket Club, MCC, Norfolk County Cricket Club and the English cricket team. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He was born in Lingwood, Norfolk on 26 March 1916. His three brothers ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ B. R. Edrich, E. H. Edrich and G. A. Edrich and his cousin J. H. Edrich all played first-class cricket. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Bill Edrich was an attacking right-handed batsman and right-arm fast bowler. He played in ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 571 first-class matches between 1934 and 1958, scoring 36985 runs, with a highest score of 267 not out. He scored 2440 runs for England in 39 test matches, with a personal best of 219. He captained Middlesex County Cricket Club jointly with Denis Compton in 1951 and 1952 and he remained in sole charge between 1953 and 1957. He captained Norfolk County Cricket Club between 1958 and 1971. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He played association football as an amateur for Norwich City F.C. and Tottenham Hotspur F.C., during the 1930's. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In a distinguished flying career with the Royal Air Force, he rose to become squadron leader and a proud holder of the DFC. He was a great patriot. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He was married five times and he had two sons Jasper Edrich and Justin Edrich. He died following a fall at his Chesham home on 24 April 1986, aged 70. The MCC opened the twin stands at the Nursery End at Lord's Cricket Ground, in his and Denis Compton's honour. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
