Voting system
Famous theoreticians of voting systems
- Kenneth Arrow mathematically demonstrated the limitations of voting systems.
- Jean-Charles de Borda devised the Borda count in 1770.
- The Marquis de Condorcet proposed the method of pairwise comparison and Condorcet methods, and discovered the Condorcet paradox, in 1785.
- Thomas Hare devised Single Transferable Vote, also known as the Hare method.
- Andrew Inglis Clark promoted the use of STV in Tasmania.
- Steven Brams was one of the inventors and chief academic proponents of Approval Voting.
- Peter Fishburn gave multiple proofs demonstrating the mathematical possibilities of voting systems.
- Maurice Duverger observed the effects of proportional versus majoritarian systems, including Duverger's Law.
- Alan Gibbard and Mark Satterthwaite demonstrated, in the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem, that any deterministic voting system with three or more alternatives is subject to either some form of dictatorship or strategic voting.
- Victor d'Hondt devised a method of seat allocation under proportional representation.
- Charles Dodgson, also known as Lewis Carroll, studied various aspects of pairwise voting and proposed a simple Condorcet method called Dodgson's method.
- Edward J. Nanson devised Nanson's method.
- Donald G. Saari devised new methods for mathematical analysis of positional voting systems.
