Volunteers in Service to America
VISTA or Volunteers in Service to America created by Lyndon Johnson's Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, was the domestic version of the Peace Corps. This program increased employment opportunities for conscientious people who felt they could contribute tangibly to the War on Poverty. Volunteers worked in communities throughout the U.S., focusing on enriching educational programs and vocational training for the nation's underprivileged classes.

During the Clinton Administration, VISTA was brought under the AmeriCorps Program and was re-titled AmeriCorps/VISTA. Volunteers are provided a modest living stipend during their service and, upon completion of a one year term, receive a post-service transitional sum, as well as educational assistance.
