Volcans National Park
Volcans National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) lies in north western Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The national park is known as a haven for the mountain gorilla. It is home to six volcanoes (Bisoke, Gahinga, Karisimbi, Muhabura, Muside and Sabinyo) which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. The park was the base for Dian Fossey.

The park was halved in area in 1969 and was a battlefield during the Rwandan Civil War. Although still damaged by poaching, it is now a peaceful tourist attraction.
