Vladimir Antonov-Ovseenko


 

Vladimir Alexandrovich Antonov-Ovseenko (real lastname Ovseenko) ({{lang-ru|???????? ????????????? ??????? (-????????)}}, {{lang-ua|????????? ???????-????????}}) (March 9,1883 - February 10, 1939), was a prominent Soviet Bolshevik leader and later Soviet diplomat. An ethnic Ukrainian, he was born in Chernigov (Chernihiv) in the officer's family.

In 1903 Antonov-Ovseenko joined the Menshevik party. During the Russian Revolution of 1905 he led an uprising in the city of Sevastopol, and for this was arrested and sentenced to 20 year exile in Siberia. Antonov-Ovseenko soon escaped and after 1910 lived in emigration in Paris.

In May of 1917 he joined the Bolshevik party and returned to Russia. Antonov-Ovseenko actively participated in the October Revolution, and arrested Provisional Government, after the Bolshevik takeover of the Winter Palace.

In December 1917 he was put in charge of the Red Army in Ukraine and southern Russia. Led by Antonov-Ovseenko Red Army defeated Ukrainian nationalist and White Army forces in Ukraine leading to creation of Soviet Ukraine.

At the end of the Russian Civil War was in charge of Tambov region and together with Tukhachevsky brutally suppressed the Tambov rebellion in 1920- 1921. Antonov-Ovseenko policies in the region resulted in mass executions of the civilian population. During the 1920s he was close ally of Lev Trotsky in the Soviet government.

In 1934 Antonov-Ovseenko became the chief prosecutor of the RSFSR and between 1936 and 1937 special Soviet consul in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War there. Antonov-Ovseenko was in charge of the Soviet aid to the Spanish Republican government.
