Virgilius Maro Grammaticus
Virgilius Maro Grammaticus (Virgil the Grammarian) is one of the most puzzling medieval writers. He most probably lived in Ireland around year 650, and maybe was educated in mainland Spain or Gallia. He definitely knew some Hebrew and was very well trained in Latin.

We have his two works Epitomae and Epistolae that are respectively written following Donatus Ars Maior and Ars Minor. Actually we can name his works grammars only with reservation, as it seems, the main purpose of his text lies somewhere else. He quotes no recognizable author, no identifiable passage, but still his works are full of citations. So we find there Varro, Cato, three Vergiliuses, three Vulcanuses, Aeneas, Origenes, but also Sufphonias, Galbungus, Sagillus, Blastus, Gurgilius, Balapsidius ? the list can be expanded. While some names here seem to be familiar, there is no way to find what text or work is cited or referenced. His works are sometimes concidered parodies or charlatanism, but also contain clever puzzles and brilliant wordplays.
