Virchow's triad
Virchow's triad refers to three factors that Rudolf Virchow suggested predisposed a patient to developing venous thrombosis. They are:

- local trauma to the vessel wall
- stasis (of blood flow)
- hypercoagulability (of the blood)
Stated another way, they are:

i) trouble with the vessel

ii) trouble with the flow
