Vin Mariani


 

Vin Mariani (French: Mariani's wine) is a tonic created circa 1863 by Angelo Mariani. It was made from Bordeaux wine and coca.

This tonic was copied by John S. Pemberton who is known as Coca-Cola's inventor. Therefore, Angelo Mariani is known as the Grandfather of Coca-Cola.

When cocaine is administered on its own it yields two key active compounds, ecgonine methyl ester and benzoyleconine. Neither of these compounds have any psychoactive properties.

However when combined with alcohol, like for example in 'Vin Mariani', the mixture has a powerful psychoactive: cocaethylene.

Vin Mariani was very popular in its day, even among royalty such as Queen Victoria of England. Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Saint Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers. Pope Leo awarded a Vatican gold medal to the wine, and also appeared on a poster endorsing it.
