Village Vanguard
The Village Vanguard is a famous jazz club in New York City that has been around since 1935, and has featured all the big names in jazz. It was founded by Max Gordon and is now run by his wife, Lorraine Gordon. At first it also featured other forms of music such as folk music, but it has been known as the home of live jazz since it switched to an all jazz policy in 1957. There is a long series of Live at the Village Vanguard recordings, including performers from Sonny Rollins to Wynton Marsalis. The two most famous engagements in the club's history are probably those of John Coltrane and Bill Evans, both in 1961.
