Viktor Yushchenko


 

Viktor Andriyovych Yushchenko (Ukrainian: ?????? ?????????? ??????) (born 23 February 1954) is the President of Ukraine. As leader of the Our Ukraine (Nasha Ukrayina) political coalition, he was the main opposition candidate in the OctoberNovember 2004 Ukrainian presidential election. Ukraine's Central Election Commission declared him the winner of the 26 December 2004 re-run of the runoff election, by 52% to 44% over Viktor Yanukovych. Yushchenko had previously served as the chairman of the country's central bank from 1993 to 1999 and as the Prime Minister of Ukraine from 1999 to 2001.

Early life

Yushchenko was born in the village of Khoruzhivka in Sums'ka oblast', into the family of a teacher. He studied economics in Ternopil' and afterwards worked as a rural accountant in Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast'. In 1975?1976, he served in the army.

In 1976, Yushchenko was hired in Sums'ka oblast's branch of the Soviet Union State Bank and worked for the bank until 1988. That year, he was promoted to a managerial position in the Agro-Industrial Bank in Kyiv (the bank was reorganized in 1990 under the name "Ukrayina"). Yushchenko held the post of the first deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the bank until 1993.
