Since "Victoria" is also one of the christian names of Vita, and since after marriage Vita was allowed to keep the surname she had by birth (due to nobility rules in the United Kingdom at that time), and since she published some works under the name of Victoria Sackville-West at the beginning of her career as a writer, some confusion is possible, e.g. the 1936 published Oxford Book of Modern Verse 1892-1935 refers to the daughter.

- the daughter is usually called Vita;
- the mother is usually called Victoria or Lady Sackville.
