The responsibility for writing the volumes was delegated to individual counties. In general the histories begin with some details of the County as a whole, before surveys of each Hundred. The first volume was published in 1901 and publication continued slowly throughout the twentieth century but eventually ground to a halt. The series was restarted in the 1990s, and there are currently more than 230 individual volumes.
