Victor Willis


 

Victor Edward Willis (born 1952) is a singer and dancer, best known for his roles as the "Police Officer" in the seminal 1970s disco group, the Village People. Willis was also the co-author of several hits of the band, including Macho Man and In the Navy.

Willis was recruited to the band by founder Jacques Morali in 1977, and was the lead vocalist on several of the Village People hits, notably the still-popular YMCA. Willis married former television star Phylicia Rashad in 1978 but was divorced in 1980. Around the time of his divorce, Willis was also fired from the Village People for cocaine abuse. He was replaced by Ray Simpson.

In February 1997 Willis was arrested on robbery and cocaine charges in Reno, Nevada, after a woman accused him of stealing her money and jewelry. The charges were later dropped.

In July, 2005, Willis was arrested in San Francisco for possession of a handgun and cocaine. At the time of arrest, it was reported that Willis also had an outstanding warrant for narcotics.
