Version 2.0

Version 2.0 is the second album by the band Garbage, which was released on May 12, 1998. The album topped the charts in the United Kingdom and reached #13 in the United States. In both countries, Version 2.0 spent over one year on the charts and went platinum.

On April 27, 1998, Garbage released the single "Push It". It featured dance and techno influences but nevertheless achieved great success on alternative rock radio. The song also sampled "Don't Worry Baby" by The Beach Boys, used with permission of Brian Wilson, who was very interested in the project. "Push It" reached #9 in the UK and #5 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also reached #52 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Push It" was released in conjunction with one of the most visually spectacular and controversial music videos of the 1990s. With animation techniques that matched the stunning aural mesh of the song, the video saw Shirley Manson witness the murder of various male companions by triplets of frightening assassins.

Several successful follow-up singles were released from Version 2.0. On July 6, 1998, "I Think I'm Paranoid", a classic alternative rock track, was released. It peaked at #9 in the UK and #6 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart. Garbage also put out "Special" (sampling The Pretenders' "Talk Of The Town"; Manson is a big fan of Chrissie Hynde), perhaps their most pop oriented and broadly successful song, on October 5, 1998. The song reached #15 in the UK, while peaking at #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on the Modern Rock chart in the U.S. Finally, "When I Grow Up" and "You Look So Fine" reached #9 and #19 respectively in the UK. The former also hit #23 on the US Modern Rock chart.
