Judging from the existence of a cemetery that dates from the 10th to 7th century BC, it appears to have been inhabited continuously since at least the Iron Age. The town is close to the site of ancient Aigai (or Aegae), once the royal capital of ancient Macedon, ruled by the Temenid dynasty from about 650 BC onwards.
