Vegetarianism is a dietary practice characterized by the exclusion of meat, poultry, fish, body parts of any animal, products derived from animal carcasses (such as lard, tallow, gelatin, rennet and cochineal), and/or eggs and dairy products from one's diet.

Opinions differ as to whether eggs are acceptable in a vegetarian diet — lacto vegetarians feel that they are not whereas ovo-lacto vegetarians feel that they are. Both groups accepts the inclusion of animal-derived products such as honey, milk and other dairy products, in their diet; the practice of excluding these is termed veganism.
