Recent events
In October 2003, Vikernes failed to return to his low-security prison in Tønsberg, Norway after having been granted a short leave. After hijacking a car, Varg was apprehended by the police. He was caught with an unloaded AG-3 assault rifle, 700 rounds, a number of smaller weapons, a handheld GPS system, communications systems, a PC, military uniforms, a bullet proof vest, and camouflage clothes http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks/article656500.ece. He received an additional sentence of 14 months for the incident, somewhat less than the 22 months wanted at the trial, and has been moved to a maximum-security prison in Trondheim. Varg stated in a recent interview that he should, under Norwegian law be released in mid-2006 on probation, though he is not very optimistic. http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article655724.ece http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article656646.ece http://www.metalcrypt.com/pages/interviewsframe.php?intid=170

- 19 years old Novak Majstorovic, guitarist of the band Schwarzreich, arsoned a 100 years old church in Melbourne in august 2004. In all media depictions of the event he is said to have been heavily influenced by Burzum, he has however stated on several message boards across the internet that the influence doesn't stretch beyond the superficial and that the media has overblown his statements to the police to suit their own ends. He claims that the arson had very little in common with the attacks that are alleged of Varg which (if true) had Nordic heathen nationalism at their core. He states that his attack was a symbolic peice of propaganda that represented his quasi-anarchistic ideology. http://www.theage.com.au/news/opinion/dont-simply-demonise-death-metal/2005/09/28/1127804542833.html/ http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,16360600%255E1702,00.html
- When police searched the homes of three girls killing 61 year old nun Maria Laura, whose birth name was Teresina Mainetti, in Chiavenna, Italy, they found a large number of death metal records. Among the records was also Burzum according to several newspapers http://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/2000/07/25/212726.html http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=6897182 and the case is generally attributed to satanism. http://www.cesnur.org/2003/vil2003_menegotto_2.htm
