Van Abbemuseum


 

Van Abbemuseum is a museum of modern art located in the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands close to the Dommel river. The building was built in 1936 in the tradionalist style by the architect Alexander Kropholler. A new extension to the building, including a 27 metre high tower, was inaugurated in 2003 by Queen Beatrix.

The museum's collection was begun in 1903 by a local cigar manufacturer, Henri van Abbe, and contains works by Jan Sluijters, Carel Willink and Isaac Israëls. More recent acquisitions include pieces by Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian.
