The character of D is a dhampir (mistranslated in the films first as dampeal, and later as dunpeal), a child of a vampiric father and a human mother. He is the host of a sentient parasite, which appears as a face in his left palm, enjoys annoying D to no end, and can suck in massive amounts of matter. (The "parasite" in his hand is actually a "Life Force Generator.") It appears as needed, emerging as a human face in the palm of D's hand. All other times it is a regular palm. It consumes earth, fire, wind, and water (or as many of the four elements that are immediately available), and can restore life to a dead Vampire Hunter D. Along with bringing the dead "owner" back to life, the "parasite" has the powers to cast spells (such as sleep and truth spells). It has it's own mind and will and can survive if severed from the host body.) D rides a horse with mechanical legs and wields a long-bladed sword and wears a mystical blue pendant. The mystical blue pendant protects D from attacks against machines, rendering him untouchable. In the novels, he also wields wooden needles which he can throw with super speed. He hides his face with long hair and a wide-brimmed hat. His appearance is that of a youth of 17 or 18 and his beauty is mesmerizing and transcendant. He is the only "success" of the Sacred Ancestor, who was Dracula himself.
