The story is about a scheming widow, Merteuil (played by Bening), and her former lover, Valmont (played by Firth), who have a bet regarding the corruption of the widow's young cousin, Cecile (played by Balk) about to be married to Merteuil's recent lover. Valmont bets that he can seduce her, even though she is an honorable woman. If he wins, he can have Merteuil to do with as he will. However, in the process of seducing Cecile, he falls in love with another woman (played by Tilly).
