Valley Fever

Coccidioidomycosis, also called Valley Fever, is caused by the fungus Coccidioides spp., which include Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii. Infection typically occurs following inhalation of fungal spores, which exist in the soil of endemic areas. These endemic areas include parts of the southwestern United States, as well as areas of Central and South America. Most infected persons will experience a limited flu-like illness, but a small proportion may develop life-threatening, disseminated disease which can involve the meninges, skin, bones, and joints.
