Vaikom Muhammad Basheer
Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (b. at Thalayolapparambu in Vaikom, 21 January 1908; d. at Beypore in Calicut, 5 July 1994) is an important figure in modern Malayalam literature and one of India's greatest fiction writers. He is well known as a thinker, humanist, novelist and short story writer. His works are credited with making literature popular among the masses. He also took part in the Indian Independence Movement.The Indian government recognized his contributions by awarding him the prestigious Padma Sri in 1982.
