Vadym Meller
Vadym Meller (1884?1962) was a painter and theatrical designer.

Meller was born in Saint-Petersburg. After graduating from the Kiev University with a degree in law, he acquired artistic education in the Munich Arts Academy.He was in close contact with Der Blaue Reiter group. In this time he met Wassily Kandinsky with whom became friends with. Vadym Meller started to exhibit his works as an artist after he had moved to Paris: Salon of the Independent (1913) and Spring Salon (1914). He was a student of Antoine Bourdelle. In 1912-1914 together with Kazimir Malevich, Sonia Delaunay, Alexander Archipenko,Aleksandra Ekster participated in exhibitions: Salon des Independants and Salon D' Automne alongside Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, André Derain.

After returning to Kiev in 1917, he worked at easel and monumental painting, graphical design, and costume design. His transition to scenography as the main field of artistic activity took place in the first post-revolutionary years. From 1919-1920, he worked with dancer Bronislava Nijinskaya (Vaslav Nijinsky's sister) in her ballet studio.

In 1922 already Les Kurbas invited Vadym Meller to just founded "Berezil" theater.In 1925 Meller participated in Exposition Internationale des Modernes in Paris where he was awarded a gold medal for the interior design of the "Beresil" Theatre. He worked there as a chief artist till 1945. Vadym worked as an acting director of the Monumental Painting and Sculpture Institute of the Academy of Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR (1946?1948), a chief artist of the Kiev Music Comedy Theater (1948 - 1953) and a chief artist of the Iv. Franko Kiev Academic Theater (1953?1959).

Vadym Meller died in Kiev. His personal exhibition was held in 1985 in Kiev.

Besides the above mentioned exhibitions in Paris, Vadym participated in many other ones in Kiev, Moscow, Kharkiv, Tbilisi and other cities of the former Soviet Union, as well as abroad ? in Cologne, Warsaw, Copenhagen, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Budapest, Prague, Bucharest, Rome and Naples.

In recent years Meller's artworks have been displayed at the classical Avant-garde art exhibitions in Kiev, Moscow, Zagreb, Munich, Toulouse, San Francisco, Chicago and other cities.

His artworks are kept in the National Art Museum of Ukraine (Kiev), The Kiev Museum of Theater, Music and Cinema Art, The State Museum of Book and Printing of Ukraine (Kiev), Ternopil Art Gallery, A. Bakhrushyn Theatrical Museum (Moscow) and other art institutions.
