Due to the fact that this Enterprise was launched and commissioned so quickly following the events of ' and the destruction of the Enterprise-D many fans speculated that this ship was originally a different vessel which was hastily renamed Enterprise while still under construction. However, this has neither been substantially confirmed or denied by any canon Star Trek film or show. According to the licensed (but non-canon) novels based upon Star Trek, original Enterprise engineer Montgomery Scott helped in the design of the vessel, but this has not been suggested on-screen.
