USS Cogswell (DD-651)


 

USS Cogswell (DD-651) was a Fletcher-class destroyer in the United States Navy, serving in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. The ship is named in honor of Rear Admiral James Kelsey Cogswell, who served during the Spanish-American War, and Captain Francis Cogswell, who served during World War I. She was launched 5 June 1943 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; cosponsored by Mrs. D. C. Bingham, daughter of Rear Admiral Cogswell, and Mrs. Francis Cogswell, widow of Captain Cogswell; and commissioned 17 August 1943, Commander H. K. Deutermann in command.
