In the United States the relative senority varies between institutions. In the Republic of Ireland the President of a university is essentially the chief executive officer of the university and is more senior than the Chancellor - if these two positions exist within the university. In Northern Ireland the President is the chief academic and adminstrative officer of the university and is usually also the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
