University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania (sometimes known by the monikers UTAS, UTas or Tas Uni) is an Australian university, with three campuses throughout the state of Tasmania. It was founded in January, 1890.

Its two main campuses are the Hobart campus, located in Sandy Bay, an inner suburb; and the Launceston campus, located in Newnham. The third is the small North-West campus, located in Burnie, which allows students from that part of the state to complete the first year of certain courses without moving away from home.

It and The Australian Maritime College are the only higher education institutions in Tasmania apart from the Institute of TAFE Tasmania.

The university is organised into six faculties:

• Faculty of Education
• Faculty of Health Science
• Faculty of Law
• Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology

The university is noted for being one of the oldest in Australia and has undergone a fairly steady increase in student population since its reorganisation in 1991.

The current vice-chancellor is Professor Daryl Le Grew, who in 2004 made news by announcing that the University of Tasmania would not increase HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) fees for the 2005 and subsequent academic years. It has also been announced that the University would absorb any costs related to service delivery if "VSU" passes the Senate.
