University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is a state-supported institution of higher learning located in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. Often referred to as simply Nebraska or UNL, it is the flagship and largest campus of the University of Nebraska system. UNL was founded in 1869 was a land-grant university under the provisions of the Morrill Act. The university has two Lincoln campuses: City Campus (directly north of and adjacent to downtown Lincoln) and East Campus (two miles northeast of City Campus). East Campus was originally purchased for use as the university farm.

• Grace Abbott, a pioneering American social worker, attended the university in the early 1900s.
• George W. Beadle, winner of the 1958 Nobel prize in physiology and medicine received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the College of Agriculture in the 1920s. The George W. Beadle Center for Genetics and Biomaterials Research at UNL is named for Dr. Beadle.
• Warren Buffett, the "Oracle of Omaha" and second-richest man of the world (net worth of $43 billion)
• Johnny Carson, longtime host of The Tonight Show, who, before his death, donated 5.3 million dollars to the College of Fine and Performing Arts.
• Willa Cather, A distinguished novelist, studied at the university in the 1890s. Her novels include O Pioneers, My Antonia, and One of Ours, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. A Willa Cather Electronic Library is available from the University.
• Aaron Douglas, a distinguished painter and leader of the Harlem Renaissance, received his B.F.A.from the university in 1922.
• Bob Kerrey, a Medal of Honor recipient in Vietnam, a former governor of Nebraska, a former senator from Nebraska, and a member of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (known as the "9/11 Commission").
• Ted Kooser, who was named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2004, won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, took a master's degree at the University of Nebraska in 1968 and was a visiting professor in the English department.
• Ben Nelson, senator from Nebraska and former governor of Nebraska.
• John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I, took a law degree at the University of Nebraska while serving as instructor in military tactics in the 1890s.
• Louise Pound, longtime English professor at UNL and president of the Modern Language Association, 1954-55.
• Roscoe Pound, a distinguished legal scholar and dean of Harvard Law School.
• Kārlis Ulmanis, Prime Minister and later President of Latvia, studied and lectured at the university.
