University of Michigan Law School
The University of Michigan Law School, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a unit of the University of Michigan. The Law School, founded in 1859, currently has an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students, most of whom are earning the degrees of Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LLM). As of 2004, the Law School's faculty includes 72 full-time professors and 42 visiting or adjunct professors. The school has been highly regarded as a nationally top ranked law school for decades, and is generally ranked in the top 5 or 6 in the by lawyers, judges, and academics, according to U.S. News and World Report. It is also considered by many to be the most attractive law school in the country, rivaled only by Cornell.

In 2003, the United States Supreme Court upheld the University of Michigan Law School's affirmative action policy. In its opinion in Grutter v. Bollinger, the Court held that the United States Constitution permits the Law School to use racial background as a criterion in deciding whether or not to admit an applicant.
