University of Franeker
The University of Franeker was a university in Frisia, presently part of the Netherlands, from 1585 to 1811, and was once considered to be the greatest of all Dutch universities. Also known as the University of Friesland, it was the stopover for many Puritan colonists escaping the persecutions Bishop Laud on their way eventually to the American Continent.
