Universidad de Chile (football club)
Corporación de Fútbol Profesional de la Universidad de Chile is one of Chile's most popular football clubs, and is better known as "La U". It was born May 24 1927 as Club Deportivo Universitario from the merging of "Club Náutico", "Federación Universitaria". The club was initially conformed by the students of the Universidad de Chile and was the sports arm of the biggest university of Chile, the relationship with the university took a sideral change in 1980, as the president at the time of the club (one of the instaurated by the Augusto Pinochet's regime) decided to separate judicial, administrative and economically the club from the university, however the club is still related with the university, and the relationship between the two has never ended until today. The club's symbol, as the university`s, is the owl, known as the symbol of wisdom, but in the game jersey appears a big red U. The entire uniform is blue (jersey, pants and socks) in reference at the university color.
