The club made a name for himself more than by his titles (is the second team in Chile with 12 national cups), by the enthusiasm of his fans, an enthusiasm that born from the first game in the professionalism, when the daily news posted "the fans of Universidad de Chile were all the game chanting and popping up his team, from the bus that move them to the stadium until the end of the game". However, the team has big achievements, the first title was on 1940, just 3 years after the team's professionalism debut. After that 6 of the 12 national cups were acquired between 1959 and 1969 (59, 62, 64, 65, 67, 69) by the team that was called "the blue ballet" in reference to the beautiful style of game that they made, 9 members of that team were on the national team that get the 3rd position in the 1962 world cup, the best participation ever made by Chile in that cup. After the golden age of the Blue Ballet, the club have a cupless time for 25 years, including the 1988 divison fall (The team was 1 year in second division, in 1989 won the cup and return to the frst division). And the long-waited title finally comes into 1994 leaded by an espectacular end on the final match, when 15.000 fans of "La U" arrived at El Salvador, a miner town populated by 5.000 people. In that team was a 20 year old Marcelo Salas. The following year "La U" won the cup again in the last match, this time in front of 90.000 people in the National Stadium. After that the team won back to back titles again in 1999 and 2000, and then won the Apertura 2004. In the international cups "La U" has a pair of good runs on Copa Libertadores, most notably the 1996 when they fall in semifinals with River Plate in a match that the referee was criticized by everybody for his bad performance that favored River Plate.
